Official Rule Book
The 5x5 Football rule system is designed for competitive adult football, tournament-style play, fast pace, strategic spacing, and controlled physicality.
The Philosophy Of The Game
5x5 Football was developed around organized competitive football with an emphasis on speed, spacing, quarterback play, route concepts, defensive communication, and strategic game management.
While the league may adapt rules for specific events, tournaments, or affiliated competitions, the core format has evolved through more than two decades of organized adult football competition.
Format Overview
- 5 versus 5 format
- Tournament-style group play and Stage Rankings
- Fast-paced gameplay with limited downtime
- Passing-oriented offensive structure
- Controlled physicality and competitive adult play
- Championship tournament qualification through regular season results
Game Structure
Teams
Teams compete in a 5-player format with offensive and defensive substitutions permitted according to league structure and event format.
Timing
Game timing, halftime, running clock situations, and overtime procedures may vary slightly depending on league, tournament, weather, or scheduling conditions.
Regular Season
Regular season games may end in ties. Overtime is generally reserved for playoff and tournament elimination games.
Championship Play
Championship qualification and tournament seeding are determined through Stage Rankings and seasonal point systems.
Stage Rankings & Points
The 5x5 Football platform uses a points-based Stage Rankings system rather than traditional standings alone.
- Win = 3 points
- Tie = 1 point
- Loss = 0 points
- Additional adjustments or bonus points may apply depending on tournament structure or group-stage placement
- Group winners and wildcard teams advance into championship tournament brackets
Field & Gameplay
The game is designed around spacing, timing, quick decision-making, route concepts, quarterback reads, and defensive adjustments.
Preferred field dimensions are approximately 76 yards long by 30 yards wide, although dimensions may vary slightly based on field availability and tournament conditions.
No-Run Zones
Certain field areas are designated as no-run zones in order to maintain competitive balance and preserve the strategic passing elements of the format.
Inside these zones, offenses must advance the ball through legal forward passing plays.
Player Conduct
5x5 Football promotes competitive adult football while maintaining respect for opponents, officials, teammates, and league operations.
- Unsportsmanlike conduct may result in penalties or ejection
- Dangerous or reckless behavior may result in suspension
- Fighting or abusive conduct toward players or officials will not be tolerated
- League administration reserves the right to review incidents and enforce discipline when necessary
League Flexibility
The 5x5 Football platform may adapt rules depending on league structure, affiliated organizations, tournament partnerships, youth divisions, or event-specific formats.
Certain tournaments may use adjusted rules inspired by USA Flag, Olympic-style flag football, NIRSA, or other competitive formats while preserving the identity of the 5x5 Football system.
Commissioner & League Authority
League administration reserves the right to interpret rules, settle disputes, adjust scheduling, review disciplinary matters, and preserve competitive integrity when situations arise that are not specifically covered within the written rules.
Built Through Competition Since 2000
The rule system continues to evolve through decades of organized football experience, league operation, tournament play, and player feedback.
